Facts:In its homeland, the Fjord horse is known simply as the ‘Fjording’ and has come to represent the country’s historic pride. The Fjord is described as “beloved by the gods” in Norse mythology, which holds the breed in very high regard.
The dun color is a dilution gene and is a dominant gene.
The Norwegian Fjord horse was also used WWII, it handled the difficult terrain very well, but it was also served as food to the people of the Netherlands during food shortages.
Super fact:The Fjord Pony's ancestors were used by the Vikings as their primary mount. Therefore, it may be assumed that it affected the breeds indigenous to other countries, notably the "mountain and moorland" ponies of Great Britain, and the Icelandic Horse. Considerable numbers of the Fjord Ponies were exported to Denmark at the turn of the century. There, the breed has been used on farms, especially in the northern area known as Jutland.
